Development of a Pop-Up Book to Improve Arabic Speaking Skills (Maharah al-Kalam) for Ninth-Grade Students

This research aims to develop a pop-up book as an instructional medium to improve students’ Arabic speaking skills (maharah al-kalam) for ninth-grade students at MTs Negeri 2 Blitar. The study is motivated by the finding that Arabic learning in schools is still dominated by conventional learning media, which results in low student motivation and limited vocabulary mastery, particularly regarding natural phenomena.
The research employs the ADDIE development model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through validation sheets assessed by a material expert and a media expert, as well as teacher response questionnaires. The developed pop-up book obtained feasibility scores of 93% from the material expert and 91% from the media expert, both categorized as “highly feasible”. Teacher responses reached 96%, indicating that the media is very practical and effective for classroom use.
Findings show that the pop-up book successfully attracts students’ attention, enhances their understanding of natural phenomena vocabulary, and supports independent sentence production during speaking activities. Furthermore, the N-Gain score of 0.88 demonstrates a high level of effectiveness in improving students’ speaking skills.
The study concludes that the pop-up book developed through the ADDIE model is highly feasible, practical, and effective as an instructional medium for enhancing Arabic speaking skills, especially in topics related to natural phenomena.
